Center on Metropolitan Development

The Center on Metropolitan Development is a university-based center for teaching, research, and public discussion of economic and social policy issues relevant to further development of the greater Seattle area.  The focus of the Center is on strategies for enhancing regional economic vitality and the welfare of local residents, integrating issues of equity and justice into conversations about competitiveness, cost reduction, and growth.

The Center conducts research on economic development and workforce issues of relevance to Washington State and the nation as a whole.  Projects have been conducted by Dr. Sommers for Seattle Jobs Initiative, the State of Washington Office of Financial Management/Washington Learns and the Higher Education Coordinating Board, the U.S. Navy Region Northwest, the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, and The Brookings Institution.
