David McHardy Reid PhD

 
 


David McHardy Reid is Professor of Global Business Strategy at Seattle University’s Albers School of Business and Economics where he is Co-Director of the Albers Center for Global Business.  He previously held the Benjamin Forman Chair of International Business at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Before that he held the Malayan United Industries Chair of International Business at Curtin University in Western Australia.  Dr. Reid has also held positions at the University of Hong Kong School of Business and Economics where he was Director of the PhD program, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  Before that he was the MBA Director at the University of Edinburgh Business School.  Earlier he worked for Unilever plc where he held positions in global marketing. 

In 2003 he was made honorary professor at Strathclyde University in Scotland.  He is also visiting professor at ESCP, Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris in France. 

For several years, prior to relocating to Seattle, he held a board appointment with Gorbel, an engineering company in New York, and influenced its market entry strategy into China. During 2006 he was a consultant to SHIFF (Shanghai International Fashion Federation). In mid-2006 he was invited by the First Minister of Scotland to become a consultant in the GlobalScot network of support to Scottish companies developing international market positions.

Dr. Reid, an expert in global business strategy, has worked in 30 countries. In the last decade and a half he has analyzed the strategies of many foreign companies in Asia, having met with and interviewed over 500 CEO's and other senior officers in: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Burma and Cambodia including over 150 recently interviewed in China.


David received a PhD in Global Business Strategy from the University of Edinburgh

Publications

He has published around 100 papers and three books: two for The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on Japan and Thailand and one for the Financial Times on Korea, as well as articles in management journals, mainly on international strategy.  His research has appeared in Strategic Management Journal, Long Range Planning, Journal of International Marketing, Sloan Management Review, Thunderbird International Business Review, Wall Street Journal and a variety of other media.  


He has developed a framework for securing global IP protection and is currently working on a project titled the Chinese Model of Product Innovation.
