Materials:   Thread from a sewing kit, container for holding large washers, large washers, [optional: fish scale (weighing instrument)]
The General Idea:   Students investigate the weight (number of large steel washers) that can be borne by different numbers of threads taken from a sewing kit.  The results are graphed and students are asked to predict the number of washers it would take to break 10 threads. 
Extensions: 
Students may want to investigate whether different colors of threads are stronger than others.
