strain dirt

$ Store Activity Name:   The Strain of Dirt
Concepts / Skills addressed:   Measurement, porosity, permeability, percentages, maybe
Approximate Grade Range:   8th - 10th ?
Materials:   3 strainers, 3 different kinds of dirt, 3 plastic containers, measuring cup, ruler
The General Idea:   Students will find out that different kinds of soil retain water to different degrees.  Talk with the students about different kinds of soil and what plants need for growth.  Lead students to make predictions about how each kind of soil allows water to pass through or retains water.  Get the dirt.  Fill each of your strainers with a different kind of dirt (e.g., sandy, compost, dirt from the playground, etc.) and sit them on the plastic containers.  Pour 1 cup of water through the soil and into the plastic container.  After some period of time (1 minute? 2minutes?) measure the amount of water that ran through and determine how much was retained.  try it again when the soil is wet.  How does retention change?
