soap dispensersmall measuring cup

$ Store Activity Name:   Squirt!
Concepts / Skills addressed:   measurement, multiplication problem formulation
Approximate Grade Range:   4th - 8th ?
Materials:   Soap dispenser, measuring device for liquid volume
The General Idea:   How much does it cost to keep the school in hand soap?  Use the soap dispenser to squirt out a full ounce of soap.  How many squirts does it take?  How many squirts of soap does the average student use when they wash their hands?  (I know, I'm making a big assumption.  Maybe this can lead to a mini lesson on personal hygiene.)  How many people wash their hands in an average hour?  (Are all of the hours the same in terms of how many people use the restroom?)  Use this information to figure out how many people it takes to go through an ounce of soap, how many ounces of soap are used each day?
Extensions:
Buy a bottle of soap with a pump dispenser from the grocery store.  Does their  pump dispense more or less with each pump than  the dollar store dispenser?  What might be the reasons for this?   (What is the manufacturer trying to sell in each case?)
