$ Store Activity Name:   Soccer Dude Body Part Ratios
Concepts / Skills addressed:   measurement, ratios
Approximate Grade Range:   4th - 8th
Materials:   Soccer doll (or any other, e.g., Barbie type doll etc.), ruler or other measuring device (e.g., calipers)
The General Idea:   Make a list of measurable body parts and create ratios (e.g., the ratio of the length of the leg to the circumference of the head, or the ratio of the length of the forearm to the doll's height, etc.  Then, obtain these same measurements and create the same ratios for students.  Are the doll's measurements appropriate?  Often it seems that their feet are way too small.  (Caution: Sensitivity to body image issues may be an important consideration.)
Extensions:
Compare the ratio (foot length vs. height) for Barbie to that of other dolls.  Compare that same ratio for female dolls in general vs male dolls.  Do the same analysis for students.  (Caution: Sensitivity to body image issues may be an important consideration.)
