hammer

$ Store Activity Name:   Hammer scale
Concepts / Skills addressed:   measurement, ratio
Approximate Grade Range:   4th - 7th ?
Materials:   toy hammer, real hammer (caution!) , measuring device (e.g., ruler, tape measure, etc.)
The General Idea:   At the dollar store you can often find sets of little tools, plastic hammers, saws, etc.  These are usually very small.  How small would be the person for whom this was the right size tool?  Bring in a real hammer (Adult supervision required?) and let them compare the lengths of the real and toy hammers.  They can then use mathematics (ratios) to determine how tall the person using the toy hammer should be.
Extensions:
They can use the link below to get a growth chart allowing them to associate age with height and so determine the likely age of the person for whom the toy hammer would be appropriate.
