bowArrow

$ Store Activity Name:   Bow and Arrows
Concepts / Skills addressed:   measurement, designing an experiment, graphing, linear relationships, slope,
Approximate Grade Range:   4th - 9th ?
Materials:   bow and arrows set, measuring tape
The General Idea:   There is some kind of a relationship between the deflection of the bow string and the distance of the arrows flight - the further you pull it back, the further the arrow flies.   So challenge your students to discover the relationship and  to  be able to use the relationship to  predict the distance that will be flown for a distance that you will provide.  When I do this activity, I tape the bow down on the table (This cuts down on a load of potential problems.) and provide a measuring tape for them record the distance the arrow slides along the table.  I also tape a  strip of paper marked in inches so as to enable them to quantify the deflection of the bow string.  This set-up is similar to that for the Ramp Racing activity in that you give them the materials and the charge, let them experiment and gather data, clean up, analyze data and be ready to make prediction for a deflection distance that you will provide after, say 15 minutes (or overnight for homework) of number crunching.
